Q&A with John and BrouGH

John Topp and Brough Perkins

Q&A with Brough Perkins and John Topp, co-authors of Connection: The Discovery of a Soul System

May 26, 2021

Q: Brough, can you tell us about your life as a psychic medium? How long have you been working as a psychic, and what are some of the highlights of your life in this unusual field?

BROUGH: It’s a strange thing to say, “I have been a psychic for 21 years.” I do readings for people and I was psychic before I began doing readings. I have helped the police find missing bodies of lost boys. I can’t think of anything more rewarding.

Q: John, you work in tech, but you describe yourself as a lifelong paranormal experimenter. What does that entail?

JOHN: I’m instinctively drawn to the idea that our minds and our reality aren’t self-contained. Everything in nature is permeable and in a constant state of exchange with everything else around it. It was recently estimated that over 5,000 tons of dust from space falls to Earth every year. I think this state of exchange applies to our individual minds and to our shared reality. Telepathy is an example of individual minds connecting, and I believe that collectively experienced phenomena such as UFOs are due to some kind of overlap of realities.

I experiment in areas where these kinds of exchanges can be brought about and directly experienced. This can take the form of visual art or music, EVP — or electronic voice phenomena, where unidentified voices appear on recordings — and the work that Brough and I do, which this book is based on.

Q: How did you two meet?

BROUGH: Funny story, I was in a reading with a lovely lady and I saw that she had a friend who was encountering the same synchronicity as myself. She confirmed it was true and then here we are.

JOHN: We were both going through a period of experiencing synchronicities — alignments of external events that seem beyond chance. They were really jumping out at us and we were both trying to figure out what they meant. These synchronicities ended up leading us to each other. Even if someone thinks we were just looking for patterns, the fact is we were both finding the same pattern at the same time, and it ended up in us meeting, through no action of our own.

Q: Can you talk a bit more about what the term synchronicity means to you both?

BROUGH: I always took synchronicity to mean when outside or external situations reflect an internal condition in such a specific way that one feels the universe is either communicating directly to them, or that they predicted this moment before it happened. But what do I know?

JOHN: I see it as a kind of bending of reality around a thought. The thought could be your own thought, or a thought from something that is beyond us – some kind of greater mind. Things that seem external to us — the outer flow of events — line up to reflect something that originates in thought. Ultimately this shows us that there is no true division between inner and outer.

Q: How did you go from being friends to channelling a voice from another dimension together? I’m sure you’re aware that this is not the normal course of a friendship.

BROUGH: Nothing about my relationship with John is usual – but that’s how I like it. He was there to hold me when my mom died while I was in my twenties, and he has seen me through my ridiculous relationships, and he still marvels at my psychic work. A brother.

JOHN: Our relationship came about because of our shared interests in things psychic and outside of the norm. In addition to that, both of us have always had a desire to see how we could combine our talents to do more than we can do individually. I had been interested in the idea of channelling for a long time and would find websites online where people claimed to be channelling some angel or New Age figure. The Seth books opened me up to the potential of this area.

I think for Brough it’s a natural extension of what he does already with psychic readings, because even when he’s doing a reading on an individual, he will receive a concept that is helpful to his client, but is also universally applicable to anyone. In the channelling work, the focus is on the universal concepts.

Q: What are your respective roles in this project?

JOHN: Brough is the medium through which the voice speaks. He began hearing this voice in the mornings when lying in bed after waking up. We decided to see if it wanted to come through in a way that he could articulate and we could write down.

I record the sessions and transcribe them later. In some sessions I engage in dialogue with the voice. I shaped the material into a book, and I narrate the story elements. In the sessions that will go into the second book, it’s also explained that my presence is needed along with Brough’s to create the energy for the sessions to occur.

Q: What is Shiveya Group?

JOHN: It refers not just to Brough and me, but also to those involved in the project from the other side. This is what the concept of a ‘soul system’ is about. You could also say the group includes anyone who contributes to the project such as our editor or designer. But I’d draw the line at Amazon.

Q: You initially refer to the consciousness that speaks through Brough simply as the voice. Why do you think the voice chose you?

JOHN: One thing it said was it has attempted to channel through various people but would run into “closed systems” — minds that were not open enough. I think the key is receptivity and curiosity.

Q: What do you say to skeptics who think it’s impossible to connect with anything or anyone from beyond our physical world?

BROUGH: I say, who have you helped? I am busy trying to be of some use. I have psychic powers and I will try to open minds and point to a star. It’s all I can do.

JOHN:  The work is there for anyone who is open to it and curious. We have provided a lot of story and context around the channelling work so people can see how it came to be. Through the book and additional material that we will provide online over time, people can make their own minds up about what is going on.

If someone is interested in this book but skeptical about the source of the material, I say try reading it and see if the concepts stimulate you. We believe the content stands on its own, whatever you think of the origin.

Q: What did the voice want from you?

BROUGH: It was as much an experiment as it was a pre-arranged engagement.

JOHN: It has never made any demands of us. It has emphasized that the project is purely voluntary. When we first attempted channelling, it asked us, what do we want from it?  We didn’t have any questions planned out, and it compared that to coming up to someone on the street with a microphone and then not asking them anything.

But once we got a few sessions under our belt, they began to flow with no prompting from me. I see our job as creating optimal mental and physical conditions for the words and thoughts to flow, and then taking that material and organizing and polishing it for the reader.

Q: What are a few of the key messages that the voice wanted to convey through you?

JOHN: The dialogues and concepts have personally challenged me, because rather than building up into complex philosophical ideas, they distill everything down to its essence. The nature of the relationship between self and others; the nature of change and evolution; the future of humanity through spiritual and technological advancement. All the while maintaining the one core principle that there is no such thing as separation.

BROUGH: Relationships and forgiveness. The holographic nature of the universe. This is a shared dream. We are each and all safe in God.

Q: What do you hope readers gain from your book?

JOHN: First off, we wanted to make this a good story. Everything in the book is framed in the events and circumstances in our lives. You learn about us as individuals, and the strange story of how we met. We include paranormal photographs that act as sign posts along the journey. We describe everything that leads up to the channelling, because we want the reader to understand how it came to be.

What comes through in the channelling is dialogues, concepts, exercises, and more stories. We hope these stimulate the imagination, emotions and the mind, and lead the reader to further inquiry and discovery.

Q: Parts of the book are really funny. What role does humour play in your friendship and/or the channelling sessions?

BROUGH: John never allows me to be serious. Have you had that wonderfully rare experience of meeting a funny friend in your life? I suspect we had to find one another hilarious to compensate for the fact that we both find the other ugly.

Q: Are you still in contact with the voice? Do you have any way of checking in to see what they think of the book?

JOHN: This is a project that we don’t see any end to. We kept going after getting the material for the first book, and we have about half of the second book. The frequency of the sessions had to slow down though, in order to have time to do the book. We both have our day jobs.

We did include some conversations where we discuss the format and content of the book, and get feedback. We wanted to include some behind-the-scenes stuff, so people could understand the process. We aren’t doing this work on our own, and we will always be in conversation with “head office” about it.

Q: How much more material do you have, and what can readers expect next?

JOHN: As mentioned, we have a good chunk of material already that will go into the second book. One of the main themes will be what we call “mind power,” which is the use of the mind to affect external reality, but always with guidance from spirit.

There will be a greater focus on exercises that we will partake in, and that the reader can try as well. While much has been said on the idea of manifesting reality, we think this will bring a different angle to it.

We also plan to take the book material and shape it into a curriculum that we can teach both in person and online. We really look forward to this, especially after we’ve all been unable to have gatherings for so long. We want to make it fun and interactive.
